European surnames first
occurred between the eleventh and fifteenth centuries, with some
patronymic surnames in Scandinavia being acquired as late as the
nineteenth century. Origin for surnames are derived from place names or
geographical names such as England, occupational names such as Smith or
Carpenter in the British Isles. The spelling and pronunciation has
evolved over centuries, with our current generation often unaware of the
origin and evolution of their surnames. Our surnames has been found from
the middle ages to the present in all spellings and form. Some claim
Irish ancestry, while others are certain that the name originated in
England. The truth probably lies in both locations, but finding paper
documentation to prove these theories is easier said than done.
The value of DNA testing is its ability to help find this genetic line
by comparing the results of the y-Chromosome markers. When your results
of this y-Dna test come in and you match another tester with a proven
line, this will greatly aid in your research.
